A Message to Women Seafarers—From One to Another
My name is Camelia, and I have spent over a decade working as a medical professional aboard cruise ships. Today, I am part of Hanseatic Maritime Health, a member of the Schulte Group, which is committed to supporting seafarers’ health through medical management for cruise ships and medical consultancy services for the maritime industry.
Sailing the seas brings adventure, growth, and a unique sense of camaraderie. But for women, it also presents distinct challenges. As a nurse at sea, I have seen firsthand how these challenges impact not only physical health but also mental and emotional well-being. In honor of this year’s International Women’s Day, I want to share insights on how women at sea can safeguard their well-being and thrive in a male-dominated industry.

1. Navigating Isolation and Loneliness
Working on board means months away from home, missing milestones, and adapting to life in confined quarters. Many women, particularly those with families, struggle with this disconnection.
What helps:
- Stay connected. Make time for video calls and messages. A simple “good morning” text can keep bonds strong.
- Create a support system. Seek friendships on board. A trusted colleague can make all the difference.
- Engage in onboard activities. Social events, fitness classes, and even shared meals can help combat isolation.
As a shipboard nurse, I often found that mental well-being affected physical health. Crew members who stayed connected with their loved ones and built friendships onboard tended to cope better with the emotional demands of maritime life.
2. Balancing Work and Personal Well-being
Managing demanding work schedules alongside personal responsibilities can be especially challenging for women, who may also be managing childcare or household responsibilities left behind at home.
What helps:
- Prioritize self-care. Setting boundaries ensures time for relaxation and personal activities.
- Use onboard resources. Fitness facilities and recreational activities can help unwind after long shifts.
- Plan ahead. Before departing on a contract, arrange a trusted person to manage household or childcare responsibilities.
The maritime industry requires careful planning for both work and home life. I have seen colleagues who struggled with worry about their families, which affected their focus and well-being onboard. Having a strong support system back home is key, and at Hanseatic Maritime Health, we advocate for balanced wellness programs to ensure seafarers are supported both at sea and at home.
3. Overcoming Gender Barriers in a Male-Dominated Industry
While the maritime sector is evolving, women still face gender biases, from underestimation to limited representation in leadership roles. On cruise ships, where crews are more diverse, these challenges may be less pronounced, but on commercial vessels, they remain a reality.
What helps:
- Use your voice. Advocate for yourself and others. Confidence and competence command respect.
- Seek mentorship. Find allies in the industry who can offer guidance and support.
- Encourage inclusivity. Diversity training fosters a better work environment for all crew members.
Through Hanseatic Maritime Health, we support gender inclusivity by promoting health and well-being initiatives that benefit all seafarers. By ensuring equal access to medical resources and wellness support, we help create a more inclusive maritime environment.
4. Managing Health and Well-being at Sea
The maritime lifestyle presents unique health challenges, including fatigue, seasickness, and exposure to different environments. Women at sea may also have specific medical needs that require attention.
What helps:
- Know your resources. Familiarize yourself with onboard medical facilities and services.
- Utilize telemedicine. Hanseatic Maritime Health provides 24/7 access to doctors, ensuring medical concerns are addressed promptly.
- Prioritize preventive care. Regular check-ups before embarking can help prevent potential health issues.
Health is a top priority, and I have seen firsthand how early intervention prevents complications. Through Hanseatic Maritime Health, seafarers have access to round-the-clock telemedicine support, ensuring that no medical concern goes unaddressed.
4. Staying Safe in Ports and Onboard
While cruise ship destinations are often well-monitored, merchant ship ports can present different security considerations. Women seafarers should take proactive steps to ensure their personal safety.
What helps:
- Stay informed. Research ports beforehand and be aware of local conditions.
- Use a buddy system. Exploring with a colleague enhances safety and confidence.
- Follow onboard safety procedures. Familiarize yourself with emergency protocols and security measures.
Safety is at the core of maritime operations, and Hanseatic Maritime Health plays a role in ensuring seafarers have access to medical and wellness support that enhances their overall security. By focusing on both physical safety and mental resilience, we help create safer, healthier experiences for women at sea.
